1. How did you get your initial start in music?
I have been singing for as long as I can remember. I come from a very musical family. After high school I chose to pursue a career in Theatre Arts where studying music was an integral part in obtaining my diploma. I was successful out of college, working as a professional musical theatre performer for several years. I made the transition to film and television acting, which I loved, however over time I started to feel empty. I realized that it was the lack of music in my life. I need to sing like I need water to live. To make a long story short, a friend of mine introduced me to a few producers, an engineer, and that was it. I got a taste of what it was like to record my own song and never wanted to leave the recording studio again.
2. What would be your ultimate aim in the industry?
My ultimate aim in the music industry is to touch as many people as I can, in this world, with my music. I want to make them feel. I want to make them move, cry, remember, heal, reminisce, jump, dance. I want to make a great living making music. To perform all over the world would be a dream come true. A couple Grammy’s wouldn’t be bad either!
3. How long have you been writing your own music?
I wrote my first song about 10 years ago, but I was always too shy, and afraid to share it. I finally mustard up the courage to write and share my music 3 years ago. It is an empowering feeling to express and let it all go.
4. Who are your top three influences and why?
I can’t say I have a top three, however, three artists who truly inspire(d) me are:
Whitney Houston because she is Whitney Houston! I met her and Bobby Brown when I was 7 years old, or so.
Pat Benatar, because she was trained as a classical singer, yet made a career singing rock music. I was also classically trained, and yet I write and record pop music.
Madonna and Michael Jackson are (were) trend setters in their music, dynamic entertainers, hard workers, and major believers in themselves.
5. Is there anything you would like people to know about your current release?
I currently released a new single called ‘Round & Round’ (Feat. Joe Budden), and produced by UK producer NHD of NHD Productions Inc.
This record is one that I cherish, because it talks about a universal struggle; the struggle of being in a relationship that is toxic, because the man or woman is seeking love else where, and yet you continue to keep that person in your life. We see this happen in life over and over, and over again, and that is why I sing “We keep going in circles, round and round and round and round!” This song is now out on iTunes and Amazon so search for Round & Round or just search HunnyB. Most people will relate to it.
6. Where are you based and what’s your local scene like? Any favorite venues?
I am currently based in Canada, which is cool but a little slow in the music department. We are a ver multicultural country and love all types of music, however we tend to look outside of Canada for the artists we want to love. This is why Canadians do so well when they cross the border.
I will be moving to the UK in the New Year. I have tons of family abroad, and my fiance is also British and living in London. I can’t wait to perform at the Indigo2 , Hackney Empire, Shepherds Bush Empire, Hammersmith Palais, Hammersmith Apollo, Earls Court, Alexandra Palace, and Brixton Academy, Jazz Cafe. I have already performed at dover street jazz restaurant and I absolutely adored it.
7. Who else can you recommend from your local scene for people to have a listen to?
There are so many great Canadian artists that have yet to cross over. The ones that have crossed over that I think are fantastic are, Michael Buble, Kardinal Official, Celine Dion, Brian Adams, Nelly Furtado and Melanie Fiona. Amazing artists who should be heard more are Jully Black, Devine Brown, One Bad Son, Serena Ryder, Hedley, and me HunnyB.
