Always a difficult question, as most of us have varying musical backgrounds. We started playing at a young age and have been in various bands with various degrees of success. As By Definition in its current form, it was at Brighton’s Freebutt. A much missed venue.
2. What would be your ultimate aim in the industry?
It’s the little things we want really, the respect of our peers, money, women, booze, the usual. But seriously, I suppose the ultimate aim is to not have to do anything else, as much as we may complain, we wouldn’t trade this business for anything!
3. How long have you been writing your own music?
The band started in 2007, but has been in it’s current incarnation since 2009. After that amount of time we have definitely developed a synergy that makes writing a real adventure.
4. Who are your top three influences and why?
For our sound we draw a lot of influence from bands like Clutch or Black Label Society. There’s something about the bluesy tone that we really connect with.
Vocally we draw from artists like Down. The sheer vocal range of Phil Anselmo is mind blowing.
5. Is there anything you would like people to know about your current release?
Our debut album is ‘The Concerns Of Mortal Man’ and is released on 26/05/2014.
If you’ve heard us before, we feel it’s some of our best material to date. If not, then believe us when we say that, no matter what you’re into, we think there’s something on here you’ll enjoy.
6. Where are you based and what’s your local scene like? Any favourite venues?
We are based in Brighton, which is primarily know for it’s indie music scene but there has been a healthy scene of heavier music bubbling under for a few years now and we’ve played with some great bands. As for venues we’re big fans of the Concorde 2 and The Haunt as well as smaller venues such as The Hope and The Green Door Store.
7. Who else can you recommend from your local scene for people to have a listen to?
There are some great bands playing in the Brighton scene at the moment, shout outs to our boys in Collisions who are going to be huge this year and Death Ape Disco who are playing with us on our album launch show at the end of the month.
