- How did you get your initial start in music?
There are 4 of us in The Lightness of Being, and while the music which inspires is similar how we each got there and started playing our instruments couldn’t be more different. For example Sergio (drums) found inspiration from bootleg cassette tapes in communist era Poland while Sam was in various Oxford bands in the wake of Radiohead, while frontman Gabriel dreamed of doing music while serving in the Singaporean armed forces before moving to London to form the band.
- What would be your ultimate aim in the industry?
We aim to write and record tracks we’re proud of and to put them out there – something that’s really possible these days thanks to technology. But we started very much as a live band, spending the first 2-3 years jamming weekly and playing shows, this I still what we love most and will remain our core! It’s great to see people respond positively at shows – we certainly want to do more gigs when we finish recording the next batch of songs.
- How long have you been writing your own music?
Our frontman Gabriel had a few songs written before he and Sergio found me (Sam) and Chris (bass). Then after 6 months or so of settling into a sound we started writing as a band around 3 years back.
- Who are your top three influences and why?
Always a tricky one! Queens of Stoneage – because Josh Homme is the coolest Muthaf*cker in rock and a great songwriter with a killer band. Deftones – the groove this band kicks out is just amazing. They somehow manage to make music that’s heavy yet atmospheric, even soothing. And Jimi Hendrix, a guitarist-centric answer?
- Is there anything you would like people to know about your current release?
It’s actually quite good! We’ve been very pleased with the response so far and people are adding it to playlists even without bribery or intimidation.
- Where are you based and what’s your local scene like? Any favourite venues?
We’re based in London – where it goes without saying that there’s no shortage of venues to play or bands to see! We play venues such as The Water Rats, The Underbelly in Hoxton and The Enterprise in Camden
- Who else can you recommend from your local scene for people to have a listen to?
We played a few shows with our friends 3 Way Scratch who are a great band, and we’ve also performed with The Graveltones who have some amazing tracks.
