Interview With Healthy Junkies!

Nina and phil home 12

How long have you been writing your own music?

Nina started at the age of 8 recording her own music on her own as previously mentioned. Phil wrote his first song aged 12, it was called ‘ I hear it every night’ and looking back on it was probably a reflection of the constant arguing within my family. Together we started writing in 2008. We wrote our first song together for a friend’s birthday. She had just lost her leg. It is called Glam sister and is on our first album ‘Sick note’.

Who are your top three influences and why?

The first time I saw Kurt Kobain on MTV it inspired me to want to form a band.Jim Morrison because of his performance, his Dionysus attitude, his ability to ad lib on stage and bring theatre to his performance. Bauhaus – Daniel Ash’s guitar work is like no one else’s, it is art rock in its purest form. The band capture a post punk grandfathers of goth sound like no others. The black and white imagery they used live and in videos is stark and incredibly effective. Robert Fripp (Guitarist in King Crimson, later played with Bowie) because of his anti-melodies and chromatic crazy scales . When I first heard him play he sounded nothing like any of the blues rock guitarists I had heard up to that point.

Phil – David Bowie because of his unique chameleonlike performance, original lyrical style and natural the fluidity in his songs. Arthur Rimbaud inspired me to write, he is known as revolutionary avant garde poet in French Literature.

Nina – Kurt Kobain, Arthur Rimbaud( French poet), Jim Morrison.

Is there anything you would like people to know about your current release?

We recorded all the songs live as a band in Space Eko studios , Forest gate on an industrial road occupied by car body part shops and regularly paraded by prostitutes from a nearby brothel. The songs took 2 days to record and a little more time to mix etc. It was a lot of fun and hopefully captures the sound we have been making for the past year at gigs. It is available to buy as a CD from www.stprecords.co.uk or to download from most major download or streaming sites such as I tunes or Spotify. There are 14 songs which take you on a journey that starts with a party, a love affair and quickly descends into dysfunction and mayhem. There are some songs that are politically engaged with a clear message of standing up for yourself and fighting for your rights , the songs then turn to chase and capture until the finale of death or abduction by aliens depending on your perspective.

Where are you based and what’s your local scene like? Any favourite venues?

We are based in Tufnel park, Camden, London. Our local underground scene is thriving. There are many gigs to play in the North London area, the best one of course is our monthly night which we run at The Unicorn, Camden. This is a free night and is always busy with an incredibly vibrant crowd. All the bands support each other unlike some places where bands play then they and their friends leave. You cannot keep a scene alive like this. The people make the scene, if they can’t wait to get home for a cup of tea and telly then maybe its better that they don’t come out at all. This does not happen at Punk n roll rendezvous, our night. You can find out more about these nights on our facebook page www.facebook.com/healthyjunkiesband . Like us on facebook and you will receive all the updates for punk n roll rendezvous with details of what bands are playing.

Who else can you recommend from your local scene for people to have a listen to?

We have played with many great bands on our local scene. Too many to mention all of them but here’s a few that spring to mind, not all of them are from London but some of them regularly play at Punk n roll rendezvous. Bubblegum screw, Dragster, Jelly, Polly pickpockitz, Brassick, Maid of ace, The men that will not be blamed for nothing, Jim Jones and the righteous mind, Pussycat and the dirty Johnsons, Dead cuts.
