How did you get your initial start in music?
At a young age music was introduced and nurtured by my family but kept mainly oldies/classical/religious until middle school when my brother first showed me alternative & metal music. But I’ve always been singing as long as I can remember.
What would be your ultimate aim in the industry?
Ultimately I hope that I will be able to write and preform music for a living as long as I can, and beyond that I want to have the ability to influence or directly help musical communities flourish where kids don’t have the same access, wether that be artist development, fests, venues, etc.
How long have you been writing your own music?
I started taking writing music seriously around when I started high school, and had finally joined a band so all the pieces were there.
Who are your top three influences and why?
If I had to choose just 3 it would be My Chemical Romance, Green Day, and Fall Out Boy. The way these groups showed me how music can be more than what’s on the surface, that it’s more like watching a movie and you can laugh, cry, or feel totally overwhelmed by nothing but sound and how a tapestry is created in the mind’s eye. At times each of these bands gave me a lot more to hold onto than what I thought life had to offer.
Is there anything you would like people to know about your current release?
Our latest release “Side Effects” is something we are all very proud of, definitely the best overall product any of us have ever released. The way we attempted to capture a point in time for us as people I believe came out beautifully, and I’m so happy how it’s been received.
Where are you based and what’s your local scene like? Any favourite venues?
We are based out of Chicago, IL but all hail from different parts of the country. The local scene in the Chicagoland area has been on a steady improvement over the last few years which is amazing to see from a drop off it took a few years ago. Most all age venues closed down, ticket prices went up, local promoters monopolized venues so independent booking became impossible. But there is life again and the DIY mentality has been prevailing.
I think my favorite venues to play in Chicago would be the Bottom Lounge, and Reggie’s Rock Club have always treated us great and have had some incredible shows with us.
Who else can you recommend from your local scene for people to have a listen to?
If you haven’t yet definitely take a listen to Bonfires, Arvia, Sleep On It, As We Once Were, Belmont, City Mouth, Short Handed, and take a look into your own local scene. You never know what amazing music and people you’re missing out on until you give it a chance.
