These Raven Skies

1. How did you get your initial start in music?

We all started playing in local bands while we were in high school, performing in bands that were very different from what we sound like today.

2. What would be your ultimate aim in the industry?

Our ultimate goal is to headline festivals and our own theatre or stadium tours. We’ll be kicking things off when we open for Godsmack, Seether and Buckcherry on this year’s Rockstar UPROAR Festival http://www.rockstaruproar.com/

3. How long have you been writing your own music?

Since high school when we first started playing in bands.

4. Who are your top three influences and why?

The Tea Party: this band has been a major influence on the Canadian music scene and their middle eastern tinged rock ’n roll immediately struck all of the band members. The power and groove of The Tea Party live is infectious, and the band’s ability to seamlessly jam in the style of Led Zeppelin has provided major inspiration to These Raven Skies live set. The Tea Party’s artistry and substance sets them aside from other radio bands.

Led Zeppelin: who isn’t influenced by Led Zeppelin? The quartet is arguably the greatest hard rock band of all time and their dynamic performances on record and live serve as an endless well spring of inspiration. Their ability to blend folk, blues, world music and hard rock into a cohesive package is second to none.

Rival Sons: they’re leading the charge for classic rock inspired bands at the moment and their live performances offer the same dynamic spirit as The Tea Party and Led Zeppelin.

5. Is there anything you would like people to know about your current release?

It was produced by and features Jeff Martin from The Tea Party.  We travelled to Australia where we shared a beach side home for a few months, writing the new album.

6. Where are you based and what’s your local scene like? Any favourite venues?

We are based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and our local scene is developing rapidly into a Canadian forerunner. Calgary has traditionally been a very strong country music market.

7. Who else can you recommend from your local scene for people to have a listen to?

I’d recommend checking out these two Calgary area artists:

Tattered – post hardcore / metal artist produced by Alex Whitcombe (from These Raven Skies), Jeff Bikas and Dave Robinson
